When Smucker Exteriors met Mr. Mancaruso, his home was wearing a dated redwood exterior that had weathered unevenly over the years. He was looking for an upgrade: something modern, stylish, and enduring.
In replacing the cedar, the Smucker Exteriors team wanted to find a material that offered a clean, modern look. Additionally, we wanted to help Mr. Mancaruso maintain the natural warmth and feel of his original siding.
The Full Scope of Work
This project involved a major exterior refresh, moving to a modern, stylish look with a focus on deep color and texture.
Siding, Soffits & Fascia:
- James Hardie Board and Batten: We installed the gorgeous James Hardie fiber cement pre-finish siding in board and batten Cedarmill (Statement Collection, Timber Bark color).
- Smart Installation: We didn't remove the existing siding; instead, we used it as a solid base and installed new Hydro-Gap drainable house wrap over it.
- Trim Work: Installed 1x4 premade Boral outside corners to match the siding color.
- Aluminum Finishes: Installed new smooth aluminum fascia and rakes in a dark brown/Expresso color.
- Vented Soffits: Put in new universal triple 4" vinyl vented soffits (dark brown/Expresso color) to ensure proper attic airflow.
- Doors & Windows: We kept the existing windows and doors, but installed new aluminum trim capping and weather strips on the garage door.
Roofing & Skylights:
- Standing Seam Metal: Installed a 26-gauge standing seam metal roof on the pent roof in the back and the front porch roof—a high-end, 40-year warranty system!
- Skylights: We replaced one existing skylight with a new Velux skylight and added a second new Velux S06 solar powered fixed skylight on the back bedroom roof.
Gutters & Extras:
- Premium Gutters: Installed 6" seamless gutters (Dark brown/Expresso color) with 3x4 downspouts.
- Leaf Guard: Added 6" stainless steel mesh leafguard to all the new gutters for easy maintenance.
- Structural Upgrade: We performed a change order to upgrade the porch structure to handsome, exposed Douglas Fir posts and beams (8x8).
Mr. Mancaruso’s home is now the perfect blend of modern design and timeless comfort—and the combination of vertical siding, metal accents, and exposed wood beams has transformed it from weathered to wow-worthy.
Here’s how Mr. Mancaruso put it:
“Smucker Exteriors transformed my redwood house into a modern home like you’d see on Fixer Upper with Joanna and Chip Gaines. The workers were amazing and didn’t stop but for a half-hour lunch. If they saw something that wasn’t right with the house, they redesigned it to make it better. Everyone who sees my home now is just blown away with every detail. Thank you, Allen and crew. You did a fantastic job without me having to worry—making the whole process enjoyable to watch in amazement.”
